Using a composing stick


















Rule #1 Hold stick with left hand as pictured. Thumb is used to keep pieces of type aligned and tight.

Rule #2 Letters go in stick left-to-right, upside down. Start in left corner.

I have rarely held my composing stick in this position because it is tiring. Instead I hold the stick at say 45 degrees and place the "butt" of the stick against my body. You can set continuosly without any discomfort and read what you've set more easily. Have been doing it this way for 50 years.
